Creating a deepfake used to be a time-consuming, expensive process that required a high level of technical expertise. However, with the advent of machine learning algorithms, it's now possible to make a deepfake in just a few minutes using off-the-shelf software and a few dollars.

NPR identified three deepfake audio detection providers — Pindrop Security, AI or Not and AI Voice Detector. Most claim their tools are over 90% accurate at differentiating between real audio and AI-generated audio.

Existing rules in the UK and some US states already ban the creation and/or dissemination of deepfakes. The FTC would make it illegal for AI platforms to create content that impersonates people and would allow the agency to force scammers to return the money they made from such scams.

Georgia, Hawaii, Texas and Virginia have laws on the books that criminalize nonconsensual deepfake p*rn. California and Illinois have given victims the right to sue those who create images using their likenesses. Minnesota and New York do both. Minnesota's law also targets using deepfakes in politics.

By enabling the creation of convincing yet fraudulent content, Deepfake technology has the potential to undermine trust, propagate misinformation, and facilitate cybercrimes with profound societal consequences.

As these generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies become more common, researchers are now tracking their proliferation through a database of political deepfakes.

What techniques detect deepfake? ›

Details are the weak point of deepfake software. Therefore, we can spot them by focusing on small aspects, such as dull shadows around the eyes, unrealistic facial hair, overly smooth or wrinkled skin, fictitious moles and unnatural lip colour.

Check the consistency of shadows and lighting. Often the subject is in clear focus and appears convincingly lifelike but elements in the backdrop might not be so realistic or polished. Face-swapping is one of the most common deepfake methods. Experts advise looking closely at the edges of the face.

Document everything. Record all evidence of this abuse — screenshot the images, your takedown requests, and any related communications. Flag or report the post and alert the platform administrators or moderators. Non-consensual p*rnographic content of any kind violates all mainstream platform use policies.

To combat such abuses, technologies can be used to detect deepfakes or enable authentication of genuine media. Detection technologies aim to identify fake media without needing to compare it to the original, unaltered media. These technologies typically use a form of AI known as machine learning.

Typically, deepfakes are used to purposefully spread false information or they may have a malicious intent behind their use. They can be designed to harass, intimidate, demean and undermine people. Deepfakes can also create misinformation and confusion about important issues.

Researchers are developing new ways to detect deepfakes, such as AI models that spot color abnormalities. And authentication methods, like digital watermarks, can help prove that a video or image has been altered. But simply detecting deepfakes may not be enough to prevent harm.
